Washington, D.C., is more than the most powerful city in the world. It’s also a great place for foodies — with classic and creative options ranging from high-end Michelin restaurants to authentic ethnic hot spots. Having lived in the Washington area off and on since college, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to enjoy many of them.
And the D.C. dining scene just got even better. Bilt Dining arrived in the Washington, D.C., area last month. It’s a new program that lets you earn rewards points at restaurants; the points can be redeemed for travel and other things.
Bilt is an innovative rewards program. Its Mastercard belongs in the wallet of almost anyone who travels. That’s because of its unique blend of benefits.
The card pays:
- 1 point/dollar on rent — without transaction fees. Rent or condo fees are a big budget item for many people — meaning a potentially big source for lots of credit-card rewards points. But most landlords and property-management companies charge transaction fees for using cards, and those can easily wipe out the value of any points. But Bilt has found a way to avoid those fees when using its Mastercard. Bilt will set up a bank account for you that you use only for your housing payment. When you do so, your Bilt Mastercard is charged for the same amount. Then you pay it like any other credit-card bill. It’s quick and easy to set up.
- 2 points/dollar on travel
- 3 points/dollar on dining
- up to 5 points/dollar on Lyft rides
- 1 point/dollar on other purchases
Bilt celebrates “Rent Day” — the first of each month — with double points on non-rent spending, opportunities to earn bonus points through things like trivia games, and sometimes benefits like elite status with one of its partners.
Points are transferrable to several travel partners. The Bilt Mastercard is the only major card whose points transfer to American Airlines’ AAdvantage program. Bilt’s other airline partners are: Aer Lingus, Air Canada, AirFrance/KLM, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia, Turkish Airlines, United, and Virgin Atlantic. Its hotel partners are Hyatt and IHG.
There is no annual fee, but you must use the card at least five times per billing period in order to earn points. The card is issued by Wells Fargo.
With Bilt Dining, you can actually earn up to 16 points/dollar at participating restaurants. If you use your Bilt Mastercard, you’ll earn up to 10 points/dollar via Bilt Dining as well as the 3x points for using the card. And if you use the card on Rent Day, you earn 6x points, plus the up-to-10 Bilt Dining points — for a whopping 16 points/dollar.
But you don’t even have to use the Bilt Mastercard. You’ll still earn up to 10 points/dollar when using any registered credit card at a participating restaurant. So if you want to link a foodie favorite like Capital One’s Savor, you can, and you’ll still earn the up-to-10 points/dollar from Bilt plus the 4 percent cash-back from Capital One.
