Pumpkin-pie spice is autumn in a small glass jar–earthy, layered, vibrant. A whiff of its fragrance is enough to evoke images of changing leaves, crackling fires, mulled drinks, and of course pumpkin pie. And just as we can all have different favorite things about the season, from big Thanksgiving gatherings to quiet nights wrapped in cozy sweaters, we can have different preferences among the spices that make up this sensual blend–cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. And since these ingredients are all probably in your kitchen right now, you can make your own mix that brings out the flavors you like best.
My recipe below contains a little more nutmeg than you might see in others, because I love the sweet nuttiness of it. I also include a little cardamom, because I think it adds another hint of texture. I hope you’ll experiment with making your own pumpkin-pie spice mix, until you find just the right blend that you and your family will love.
- 3 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1.5 tbsp ground ginger
- 2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp ground allspice
- 1 tsp ground cloves
- dash ground cardamom
Blend all ingredients thoroughly.
Store in a old spice jar or other airtight container.
